INTRODUCTION TO THE USED OR EXPIRED OIL AND FAT COLLECTION PROJECT

Used or expired animal and vegetable oils and fats have long been a significant environmental concern not only in Vietnam but also worldwide. Typically, after use, people tend to discard these oils and fats into household waste, wastewater, or resell them for improper reuse, such as mixing with artisanal production oils and fats for food processing (fried shallots, fast food) or as animal feed additives. These actions not only pollute the environment but also seriously affect human and animal health. Many people also believe that used or expired oils and fats are hazardous waste that needs to be buried or incinerated, wasting resources and incurring large disposal costs.

However, with the development of science and technology, used or expired oils and fats are no longer considered waste but have become a valuable resource. Thanks to modern technologies, this raw material can be recycled into many useful, environmentally friendly products. Utilizing waste oils and fats helps minimize pollution, support the development of sustainable renewable fuels, replace dwindling fossil fuel sources, and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, limiting global climate change.

Vietnam, a country with a long-standing rice farming culture and diverse cuisine, has seen the strong development of food production and processing industries and services, generating a large amount of used or expired oils and fats. If not properly treated, this oil and fat source can seriously harm human and animal health, aquatic species, and pollute the environment. Currently, the demand for collecting and recycling used oils and fats is rapidly increasing globally, thanks to their diverse applications in various industries, including the production of biofuels (biodiesel), lubricants, soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and organic fertilizers.

Many countries around the world, especially in Europe, North America, and some Asian countries, have enacted sustainable energy development policies, encouraging the reuse of used or expired oils and fats. Used cooking oil (UCO) is increasingly becoming an important raw material in biofuel production, while also being applied in areas such as environmental sanitation, cosmetics, and organic fertilizers. Therefore, the collection, transportation, treatment, and storage of used oils and fats need to be carried out according to strict processes, complying with state standards and regulations on environmental protection. This helps minimize polluting emissions, promote recycling to protect human, animal, and plant health, and improve food safety quality.

Vietnam, as an emerging economy in Southeast Asia, has great potential to participate in the used oil and fat collection and processing market, contributing to meeting global demand and promoting sustainable development.
